Basic and primary education in Åland is compulsory and free of charge. Children start school the year they turn 7 years old.

Primary/Basic education

Primary school: classes 1-6 (age 7-12). Lower secondary school: Classes 7-9 (age 13-15). The child must be registered at the Local Register Office (’magistraten’) in order to attend school. An FPA national health insurance card is not required. The municipalities are responsible for providing primary education. Contact your municipality for more information.

Upper-secondary education (general and vocational)

Most students go on to general or vocational upper-secondary education or vocational training, having finished primary education. The upper-secondary education is provided for by Ålands gymnasium.

Åland University of Applied Sciences

If you already have an upper-secondary school education, there are training programmes and courses at the Åland University of Applied Sciences.
