In Åland we can offer support and care if you are struggling for any reason.

It pays to seek help if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • insomnia
  • no appetite
  • everyday life feels onerous
  • you cannot bear to work or see people
  • physical symptoms without any medical reasons for these
  • increased alcohol or drug use

Contact your health centre in the first instance. At ÅHS there is a mental health clinic and a psychiatric clinic where you can receive help. You normally need a referral from a doctor to come here.

If you are having severe difficulty, you can call the mental health clinic for guidance.

In the event of emergency mental health situations, call 112 or visit the emergency department at the hospital.

Eating disorders

An eating disorder is an illness that might present as:

  • anorexia
  • bulimia, with compensatory behaviour such as vomiting or extreme exercise, for example.

This might occur in combination with:

  • an obsessive fixation on body, weight and eating
  • a clear ambition to refuse food and lose weight

An eating disorder can be fatal. In Åland we have TREAT, a clinic that can help you to recover from your eating disorder. You can contact TREAT directly to obtain help.
